SCANA Energy Opens Homework Center At Nesbit Elementary

GCPS Foundation partner SCANA Energy will open a homework center at Nesbit Elementary School on Tuesday, Nov 1, with an appearance by Harry the Hawk of the Atlanta Hawks. 

The Nesbit Elementary Homework Center operates from 3:45 p.m. – 5:45 p.m. on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. “We are pleased to partner with SCANA Energy to help our students excel through the after-school program,” says Clayborn Knight, principal of Nesbit.

46 Gwinnett students make 2012 National Merit list

More than 40 Gwinnett County Public Schools (GCPS) students recently learned that they’re on their way to earning some of the nation’s most prestigious scholarships having been named a 2012 National Merit Scholarship Program Semifinalist. The National Merit Scholarship Corporation recently announced the names of the 46 GCPS high school seniors presented with the honor.

The Knighting Ceremony Foundation Kickoff on September 15 @ 550 Trackside (Downtown Depot) was a great success!  A large crowd was on hand to see members of the community “Knighted” (with a real sword) as donors were recognized for their support of the ten public schools of the Central Gwinnett cluster.

Lanier Cluster Foundation wins $40K Motorola Solutions Grant

Lanier High students soon will have additional resources to support additional Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) learning opportunities thanks to a $40,000 grant received from The Motorola Solutions Foundation, the charitable arm of Motorola Solutions, Inc. The grant was awarded to the Lanier Cluster Education Foundation and the Gwinnett County Public Schools Foundation Fund, Inc.

The Motorola Solutions Foundation Innovation Generation program supports schools nationwide with funding for hands-on, innovative afterschool programs, science and mathematics clubs, teacher training, and mentoring programs. In Gwinnett, Motorola Solutions Foundation’s generous donation will allow Lanier High to build on current programs, primarily its Center for Design and Technology (CDAT).

The Board of Education honored members of the Booster and Foundation Education Committee for their service to Gwinnett’s schools. Specifically, the Board commended Dave Cook of Edward Jones; Steve Kosmala of IBM; Warren McClellan of McClellan, Allen & Associates, LLC, CPA; Michael Wetzel of Wetzel Mediation and Arbitration; and Mike Emery who serves as the Director of Athletics and Community Schools. The Committee, established in 2007, has worked to establish an education program to assist community and school leaders as they lead booster clubs and foundations that benefit schools and school systems. In addition to the work this committee has done in Gwinnett, its members have educated other groups including other Georgia school systems, the Georgia Music Educators Association, the National Athletic Directors Association, and other local education related non-profit organizations. In addition, Mr. McClellan was a leader in formation activities for the GCPS Foundation Fund, Inc. and continues to serve as a Trustee. Both Mr. McClellan and Mr. Kosmala have worked closely with the GCPS Foundation Fund in establishing Cluster Foundation Committee guidelines. Mr. Kosmala also assisted in the creation of the first comprehensive GCPS Volunteer Organization policy and procedure adopted by the Board in November 2010. In addition, Mr. Kosmala has been an active member of the Superintendent’s Council of Community Advisors since 2000.

GA Tech GCPS Game Day – Sept. 24

GA Tech vs UNC GCPS Day – September 24th
Deadline to order tickets: Friday, August 26th!

GA Tech is offering reduced price tickets to GCPS for the GA Tech vs UNC football game on Saturday, Sept. 24, 2011. A portion of each ticket purchase will be donated to the district in support of scholarships and grants.

$40 per ticket ($50 regular price) Game time will be announced by GA Tech at a later date.

GCPS will be seated in sections 210 and 217 (upper level seats), behind the parent section. Note: Bring sun protection, section does not get the afternoon shade.

Please pick up tickets at the Will Call customer service windows located at the North end of the stadium on the corner of Techwood and Bobby Dodd Way. The Will Call staff will have a master list of all GCPS orders. Reference the specific name given on the order form. GA Tech strongly suggests an early arrival for the game, up to one hour.

Over 300 GCPS supporters attended last year along with Cobb County Schools and we had a great time – outstanding view of the campus, Bobby Dodd Field, and the Atlanta skyline!
